Bighorns and Hunting

Tim Steller: Bighorns’ proposed return to Catalinas raises hunting debate – An article questioning the role of hunting in the reintroduction plans. There is some interesting information in this article but I thought it was not direct/clear enough in stating that hunting Bighorn Sheep in the Santa Catalina Mountains – assuming the population becomes large/healthy enough – is a Project Objective in the AZGF Reintroduction of Desert Bighorn Sheep into the Santa Catalina Mountains – 2012 – document.

Prison Fire Update 7/6

InciWeb – Prison Fire – “The Prison Fire, near the old prisoner of war camp in the Santa Catalina Mountains, is burning in extremely rocky, rough, and difficult terrain but crews are making progress in bringing it to containment. The fire, spanning 270 acres, is now at 80% containment with full containment anticipated this weekend. The fire began with a lightning strike the evening of June 30th.”

Bighorn Reintroduction Concerns

Restoring bighorn sheep won’t require wholesale slaughter of lions – This article attempts to address some of the concerns that have (I assume from the tone/title/content of this article) been expressed by people about translocating Bighorn Sheep into the Santa Catalina Mountains. As with previous articles the return of fire to the Santa Catalina Mountains (and anticipated Firescape Project), existing restrictions on travel and dogs in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness to help reduce human disturbance (which they claim will be enforced) and the killing of Mountain Lions to keep initial deaths due to predation low are all cited as positive changes/conditions that will help this project succeed. However the article does not have any interesting information about Urban Encroachment (sited as a ‘likely factor’ in their decline – which has only increased over time, about disease or about current water/drought conditions (this may not be a factor in the Santa Catalinas (?) but I believe is a factor in other areas). First mention I have seen of the Catalina Bighorn Advisory Committee Website and Facebook Page.

Prison Fire Update 7/4

InciWeb – Prison Fire – “Accurate GPS mapping today reduced the amount of acreage burned from yesterday’s estimate of 280 acres, downward slightly to 270 acres. Containment of the fire remains at 50% with full containment anticipated by Saturday evening July 6th. The fire began with a lightning strike the evening of June 30th”

Prison Fire Update 7/3

InciWeb – Prison Fire – “Overnight July 2, a monsoonal wind event hit the Tucson area and the front range of the Catalina Mountains. The flare-up crossed fire lines for a gain of approximately 40 acres. A helicopter again is using bucket drops of water to cool the fire. The Prison Fire remains 50 % contained. It has grown by 40 acres to a total of 280 acres.” I drove up the General Hitchcock Highway before sunrise today – while is was not as dark as when we observed the fire from the Bug Spring Traillhead on the night of 7/1 I could not see flames from that vantage point and only saw 5 or 6 small spots of orange from further up the Highway. Unlike 7/1 I did not smell any smoke in the area.
