Mt. Lemmon’s Prison Fire burning at 240 acres – The ‘Prison Fire’ – the article notes that the fire is 5% contained and also that “It’s traveling light fuel that already burned ten years ago” (this area burned in the Aspen Fire)
- Prison Fire Update from the Coronado National Forest – caused by lightning, reported by the Lemmon Rock Lookout.
- On the night of 7/1 we drove up the mountain, you could smell the smoke at Hairpin Turn and after dark easily see the flames from the Bug Spring Trailhead with good views just a few minutes up the trail (the Prison Camp parking area is blocked off with caution tape). The fire seemed to be west of Gibbon Mountain and likely in the area used by the route to Point 4981 Above Hairpin Turn. A picture of the fire:
